My task was to create a realistic prosthetic tongue that could stick to a subway pole.
This project re-created a scene from the movie A Christmas Story for the video prank series “Movies in Real Life” organized by the Improv Everywhere collective. In the scene, a young boy licks a subway pole and gets his tongue stuck to it.
After scouting the New York subway system I found that some trains have magnetic subway poles. I decided to create a silicone tongue and embed a super strong magnet inside that would stick to the metal pole. The tongue had to be soft enough to stretch when pulled, but also stiff enough to not droop under the weight of the magnet. With some experimentation, I was able to find the right formula for the silicone and make an internal wire structure.
I created a mold from a store-bought joke tongue and customized it to fit the magnet and a wire structure. The final castings of the tongue were very effective and realistic. A clear coat of silicone gave them a wet look.
