My girlfriend, Ran, and I wanted a bigger bed so instead of buying a new bed frame we decided to make this custom extension that doubles as storage.
After Ran came up with the design, I modeled the bed frame extension in Fusion360. I created a variable for the thickness of the plywood material so it could be filled in later. Once I bought the plywood and measured its thickness, I typed in the exact dimension and Fusion360 updated the whole model.
The design uses simple tabs and slots that make assembly easy. I added a tolerance variable into my 3d model which let me quickly adjust how tight I want the fit to be.
I also did the CAM in Fusion360. I simulated the cut paths to ensure that I wouldn’t hit any of my hold down screws.
Finally, I cut out the parts on a ShopBot and assembled everything with screws.
